History of the Battery

3 Battery was first raised as Chalmer’s Company in 1745. It first saw action in the Austrian War of Succession in 1747 in Flanders, at Rochefort, (1757) in the Seven Years War and in South Carolina, 1776-78 during the American War of Independence. This was followed by service in England, Canada, Scotland, Ireland and in Martinique until 1875 when the Battery moved to Malaya. In 1877 they took part in the Burma campaign as 33rd Heavy Battery RA and whilst campaigning captured the Myogee Bell, which is on display 3/29 (Corunna) Battery's History room today.

In 1905 the Battery moved to Dover as a Coastal Defence Battery where it remained throughout the War until 1925. In 1938 the Battery was again engaged in Coastal Defence, this time in Plymouth. The title 3rd Guided Weapons (Field) Battery was taken in 1956 and the Battery served in England and BAOR. In 1967 as 3rd Light Battery service was seen in Aden. Since then four Northern Ireland tours have been completed and as part of 47 Field Regiment RA, 3 Battery deployed to Saudi Arabia as part of OP Granby, serving throughout the Gulf War.
